Zoho Inventory vs BUSY: Which Should an Indian SME Use for Stock and Billing?

BUSY bundles accounting, GST and inventory in one desktop package; Zoho Inventory is cloud-first and built around orders from many channels. The right pick depends on how you sell and how many places you work from.

BUSY has been a fixture in Indian trading and distribution businesses for years: one package that handles billing, accounts, GST returns and stock, installed on an office PC and run by the accountant. Zoho Inventory comes at the same problem from the other direction — a cloud app built around sales orders, purchase orders, warehouses and online channels, with accounting handled by Zoho Books alongside it. If you are choosing between them, the real question is not which has more features, but where your business is heading.

How they are priced

BUSY is sold by edition, with prices that depend mainly on the edition rather than on order volume. Zoho Inventory is a per-organisation subscription where the plan sets how many orders, users and locations you get each month.

BUSYZoho Inventory
Free optionExpress edition (basic billing and accounting)Free plan: 50 orders/month, 1 user, 1 location
Entry paidBasic ≈ ₹11,000 (non-GST billing)Standard ≈ ₹999/month billed annually (500 orders, 3 users, 2 locations)
GST-readyStandard ≈ ₹16,500 (GST, e-invoice, e-way bill, batches, BOM)GST invoicing on all paid plans; returns usually filed via Zoho Books
Multi-branchEnterprise ≈ ₹22,000 (branch sync, approvals, payroll)Premium ≈ ₹2,299/month up to Enterprise ≈ ₹7,499/month (4–10 locations)

Figures are published list prices at the time of writing and exclude GST; BUSY dealers may quote differently, and additional users or add-ons cost extra on both. Verify current pricing on Zoho's official site and on BUSY's pricing page before deciding.

For a single-location trader with one or two users, BUSY's edition price is usually lower over three years than a Zoho Inventory plus Zoho Books subscription. The maths changes when you add more users, a second branch, remote staff or online sales channels, because Zoho's subscription already covers hosting, backups, mobile access and updates.

BUSY is likely the better fit if

  • Your accountant already runs BUSY and you want accounts, GST and stock in one desktop tool
  • You do real production with BOMs and need production variance reporting out of the box
  • Internet at your site is unreliable and offline working is essential
  • You sell mainly through counter or dealer billing rather than online channels

Zoho Inventory is likely the better fit if

  • Orders arrive from a webstore, marketplaces and a sales team, and stock must stay in sync across all of them
  • Owners, sales staff or warehouse teams need live stock on their phones from anywhere
  • You run more than one warehouse and want one view of stock without merging branch data
  • You plan to add Zoho CRM, a customer portal, automation or dashboards, or move to Zoho One

If you are moving from BUSY

Most migrations go smoothly when they follow a clear cutover. Export item masters with HSN codes, units and reorder levels; bring opening stock in by warehouse and by batch where you track batches; move ledgers and party balances into Zoho Books rather than Inventory; and carry open sales and purchase orders across at the cutover date. Run BUSY and Zoho in parallel for one GST return period and reconcile stock value and receivables before you stop using BUSY. If you rely on BUSY's BOM and production planning, prototype that in Zoho Inventory first — heavier manufacturing may need Zoho Creator or a dedicated MRP alongside it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Zoho Inventory replace BUSY completely?

Not on its own. BUSY combines accounting and inventory; with Zoho you normally use Zoho Inventory for stock and orders and Zoho Books for accounting and GST returns. The two sync natively, so together they cover what BUSY does, plus cloud access and online channel sync.

Which is cheaper for a small business?

For one location and one or two users, BUSY's one-off edition price is usually lower over a few years. Zoho Inventory's free and Standard plans are cheaper to start with, and Zoho tends to be better value once you add users, branches and online channels. Verify current pricing on Zoho's official site and get a current BUSY quote.

Can Zoho Inventory handle manufacturing like BUSY?

It handles light manufacturing through composite items and assemblies, which suits kitting and simple production. BUSY's Standard and Enterprise editions include BOM-based production planning and variance reports. If production is central to your business, test your process in Zoho first or plan for Zoho Creator or an MRP add-on.
